About 3 years ago I was diagnosed as having Degenerative Disc Disease and two prolapsed discs in my spine. I had suffered from back pain for many years but it was now severe enough to be affecting my daily life, some times getting up and dressed on a morning was as hard as running a marathon. Last December I saw my orthopedic consultant who wanted me to try a third course of physiotherapy. I was not optimistic as the previous courses and an epidural had been unsuccessful but, at 31, my only other option was surgery. In January I went to the gym and asked if I could speak to some one who could recommend some exercises that would help my overall fitness without injuring my back. I was introduced to Phil. After a brief chat he asked me to come back for an assessment to see what help he could offer. When I returned I was impressed to see that Phil had done some research into my back problems to see what it was. When we first started to see what I could and couldn't do I felt quite disheartened as I felt I was useless and unable to do even the simplest of exercises. Phil encouraged me to keep trying and insisted that I would see improvement. Within a couple of weeks of two sessions a week he was right, the simple exercises I couldn't do became easier, I was even doing a version of a sit up...... yes, me, doing a sit up! Now, nearly 6months later my flexibility has improved beyond measure, my endurance increased and I've gone from needing nearly 20 painkillers a day, to the odd couple when I've got a twinge! I no longer need to look for some one else to pick something up if I drop it! More than that we have such a laugh that I look forward to going to the gym! I'm not saying I'm cured. I still have bad days when I'm in pain but instead of that being the rule, it's the exception. I also know that I'm probably going to need an operation on my back in the future but, with Phil's help that's something I don't need to worry about for quite a few years to come. Most of all I'm looking forward to the end of June when I next see my consultant! I can't thank Phil enough for making me feel and move like I'm 32 instead of 82!!
Note: (Since this Testimonial was written, Johanne has been discharged from her Consultant) I started to train with Phil 5 months ago, as I am not a natural gym bunny I couldn't get motivated on my own. I was also conscious that I was not particularly skilled in using the various machines and incorrect use could cause me potential injury. Phil is extremely personable and is very good at motivation. When first meeting Phil I explained what result I wanted from the training sessions and that I have had neck surgery and was probably weak in this area. Since working with him twice a week, in conjunction with a weight loss programme, I have managed to lose 2 and a half stone. I feel healthier and my shape has changed having dropped 2 sizes. My arms and legs are much more toned. My time with Phil is spent either working on a one to one in the studio doing cardio vascular work outs (not very dignified to watch but effective!) or working on particular muscle groups such as upper and lower body. During this time, I have learned lots of new exercises and more importantly, have learned to do them correctly to eliminate injury risk. I rarely need to use the machines as Phil has shown me how effective free weights are and the new exercises are much more enjoyable. Phil has some sort of seventh sense in determining if I am genuinely struggling with a particular exercise, or if I am just being a little lazy! Needless to say, if he thinks it's the latter, there is no mercy! I never thought this would apply to me but I actually quite enjoy going to the gym now and have incorporated it as part of a lifestyle change.
