Become a health club duty manager

Health club and leisure centre duty management and operations management jobs are the first rung on the management ladder. Job duties may include total management responsibility for the health club or leisure centre facilities during your shift, including health and safety, customer care and handling complaints, staff rota and covering absenteeism as well as your usual duties. Jobs in health club operations and duty management are usually reporting directly to the facility manager or in a large complex to the assistant manager. You will be asked to attend management meetings and may be involved in the activities of all departments including sales, reception and F&B. If you want a duty manager job you will need relevant experience as well as a progressive attitude.

Duty manager qualifications

As a health club or leisure centre duty manager you will not always be expected to have any National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) or Related Vocational Qualifications (RVQ) although some roles may demand these. You will always be expected to have experience to work with at least one department but this may include sales in which case experience is the key.

As a health club or leisure centre duty manager you can get promoted into an Assistant Manager or as a sales related Duty Manager you can make it to Sales Manager. You are on the management ladder which can lead fairly quickly in an expanding organisation to the General Manager role. Duty Managers can often move to other sectors in leisure such as bar, retail, hospitality or bowling.

Duty manager salaries

Duty Managers can expect to be paid from £13k to £20 with possible bonuses. Salaries are just a guideline and will be subject to amendments due to centre size, responsibilities and location. You should stay abreast of industry events such as LIW there are bodies such as Spring Board which offer advice on career development however there is no structures courses for duty management although there are rumours of some on-line courses being in progress.
