A career as a gym instructor will certainly be varied, often challenging but definitely fun. You spend your working life in a health club or gym helping out others who are looking to gain fitness from  effectively exercising. You'll advise gym members on their current exercise programme, their fitness goals and how to best achieve these goals.

And as an aspiring gym instructor you'll want to gain the very best gym and fitness instructor award there is ... and this is the YMCA Fit Gym Instructor award.

YMCA Fit Gym Instructor course

With the YMCA budding fitness instructors can gain REPs (Register of Exercise Professionals) Level 2 accreditation by completing the YMCA Fit Gym Instructor and the CYQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing Gym.

The Gym Instructor training course content covers key componets in fitness and exercise theory and practice, including:

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • The components and principles of fitness
  • Relevant skills and knowledge needed to teach individuals and groups
  • Gym Inductions
  • Health and Safety
  • Customer Care
  • Exercise technique and training methods
  • An introduction to Essential Skills Modules

YMCA Fit Gym Instructors

As a YMCA Fit Gym Instructor course graduate you will be able to operate as a qualified fitness instructor in any health club and gym within the UK. On the Gym Instructor course you will have learnt to:

  • Identify the major bones, muscles and muscle actions of the body
  • Explain the workings of the body's cardiovascular and energy systems
  • Identify the components and principles of fitness
  • Relate the Health and Safety at Work Act to the gym environment
  • Identify good customer care and strategies for the adoption and maintenance of physical activity
  • Plan, teach and evaluate a gym programme
  • Demonstrate good personal technique and alignment on a range of CV equipment, fixed resistance machines and free weights

Course format

There are three course formats to choose from when enrolling onto the YMCA Fit Gym Instructor training course, either the intensive course format or the weekend format.

  • Intensive: 13 days spread over 3 weeks (7 days on, a week break, 6 final days on)
  • Weekend: 13 days spread over a number of weekends (may include fridays)
  • Blended: Home study to cover theory (via a home study pack) and practical assessments at a YMCA accreditted location. 

Course assessment

  • Multiple choice theory paper
  • Practical (plan, teach, evaluate)
  • Worksheets (completed during course)
  • You will be required to bring one helper for your practical assessment

Gym Instructor course prerequisites

No formal qualifications are required but practical experience of a gym and fitness training is desired.
