Types of spa: Destination spas

A destination spa, as the name suggests, is a spa which offers residential accommodation services for guests. A destination spa, also traditionally known as a 'health spa', offers a two, three or more night stay, allowing guests to access the full benefits of a total spa experience.

Destination spas defined

"A destination spa is a facility with the primary purpose of guiding individual spa-goers to develop healthy habits. Historically a seven-day stay, this lifestyle transformation can be accomplished by providing a comprehensive program that includes spa services, physical fitness activities, wellness education, healthful cuisine and special interest programming."

Definition courtesy International SPA Association

"Only a select group of Destination spas follow the tradition of the true destination spa - where the total environment is dedicated to health and life enhancement. The experience is transforming - a full immersion into healthy and joyous living. Guests come for the structured and personalized programs that blend fitness activities, healthy cuisine, wellness education, discovery classes, relaxation and renewal. Guests leave enriched for life."

What you can expect from a destination spa

Destination spas offer guests more than just one treatment or one day of pampering and luxury. Typically you can book two or three day packages, although at many destination spas it is possible to book a longer spa.

Destination spas offer popular spa and beauty treatments, including:

  • Body treatments: body wraps, mud baths, aromatherapy etc
  • Cooking lessons
  • Exfoliation: chemical peels and microdermabrasion
  • Facial treatments: facial cleansing with a variety of products
  • Fitness consultation
  •
  • Massage: Swedish massage, Lomi lomi etc
  • Medical treatment
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Reflexology
  • Waxing - the removal of body hair with hot wax
  • Manicures and pedicures

NOTE: Please be aware that destination spa treatments may vary depending on your location and choice of spa.
