Future Fit Training GP & Exercise Referral course

The GP and Exercise Referral course is aimed at qualified Personal Trainers, who have experience in instructing gym-based exercise and are currently working within the health and fitness industry.

The need for GP Referral Specialists

Patient care has extended beyond the patient-GP relationship and now involves the support of professionals possessing other kinds of expertise. While medication and patient health care is primarily the responsibility of the GP, specialists trained in exercise prescription work in conjunction with health care professionals (including GPs), to help manage, improve or cure the conditions of patients.

GP and Exercise Referral course

Devised by a team of experts and exercise specialists, the GP and Exercise Referral course will provide you with the skills, abilities and confidence to prescribe safe and effective exercise to clients with varying health issues.

The GP and Exercise Referral course content includes:

• the Exercise Referral Scheme and the roles of the Department of Health and National Health Service
• physical activity and health promotion
• behavioural management
• health and lifestyle screening
• exercise prescription
• fitness testing
• orthopaedic diseases such as arthritis and osteoporosis
• cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and coronary heart disease (CHD)
• metabolic diseases such as diabetes
• pulmonary diseases such as asthma
• raised cholesterol and obesity
• pharmacological management.

Course assessment

The assessment consists of a multiple-choice exam and case study designed to test your understanding of the management of specific medical conditions and the associated exercise prescription.

GP and Exercise Referral course awards

You’ll be awarded the Future Fit Training GP and Exercise Referral Certificate and you’ll gain 20 REPs CPD points. If you’re already registered with REPs at Level 3 your certificate will be amended to include GP and Exercise Referral as a special category of registration.
